Okay, I've been through Core Services. What's next?

If you are unable to find employment through core services or do not have transferable skills from your previous work history, there is additional assistance available through Intensive Services. These are staff-assisted services to help you evaluate your skills and explore your options.

A WorkForce WV case manager will work with you throughout this process. Some of these services may have specific eligibility requirements. As part of this process, you will be asked to complete a self-assessment. You and your case manager will review this information to help develop a plan to lead to employment.

What are Intensive Services?

During Intensive Services, you may be encouraged to participate in Hit the Ground Running. This four-week program is designed to help individuals transition from employment to job search. There are four major components:  Job search skills, job retention skills, introduction to basic computer skills, exploring new employment options and developing a plan to return to full-time employment.

What if I need training?

You may need additional skill training to find employment at a sustainable wage. Your case manager will help you explore training options that may be appropriate for you. If the training selected meets required guidelines, Workforce Investment Act (WIA) funding may be available to assist with the cost of training. Training options include Skill Training through classroom settings, On-the-Job Training, or Customized Training to meet the needs of a specific employer.

Where do I go to get my training?

The Workforce Investment Board (WIB) has a list of training providers who are eligible to offer you training. This list is available at each WorkForce WV Center. Your case manager will go over the list with you and help you choose the training and training provider that best meets your goals. Once you and your case manager have agreed upon a plan of action, then an Individual Training Account (ITA) will be established for you.

What is an ITA? What will it cover?

The Individual Training Account is how WorkForce WV pays for your training. Your case manager will assist you with filling out your application. An ITA covers:

  • Up to $4,000 for the first 12 months of training, with a maximum of $8,000.
  • Training for up to 30 months, which must be completed within a 36-month time limit.
  • You may take one course of occupational training in a five-year time period.
  • Your training must be in a Demand Occupation.

What are Demand Occupations?

A Demand Occupation is one that:

  • Has a minimum of a 2% growth rate, as defined by the Bureau of Labor Statistics, OR
  • Has a minimum of 25 projected openings in the region or area where you live and wish to work, OR
  • If you are assured and can provide documentation that you will have a job after you complete the training, AND
  • The occupation will provide you with a self-sufficient wage, after you complete your training.

Please note: You must be determined to be eligible for and approved for WIA activities before starting training.  The goal of the WorkForce WV Center and the Workforce Investment Board Mid-Ohio Valley is to assist you in returning to work at a sustainable wage.

Now let's get to work!

SUCCESS!

If you can dream it, we can help you do it! But you must take the first step. Stop by one of the eight WorkForce WV Centers. Get started by telling us your dreams. We can help you make them come true!

Check out this success story, told by someone who took advantage of what we have to offer.....

Seth Lilly/Elkview, WV: Graduated from WV Junior College with a degree in Computer Systems, with a specialty in Information and Web Design

"I am currently employed as the PC/Web Support Specialist for the WV Higher Education Policy Commission. I am responsible for end user support, network maintenance, Web design and development, and various other IT tasks. I was hired as a full time employee on June 17, 2002. I'm enjoying what I do...it's exactly what I went to college to learn!

"I am also the sole proprietor of Everbreathe Design and Consulting, which became a business last month as my ‘moonlighting' Web design requests grew more frequent. I recently completed a project under the Everbreathe label for the WV Supreme Court of Appeals, and I have a couple more in negotiation. I get to design at work, I get to design on the side. What more could I ask for?"
